Given the amount of snow we’re getting dumped on us right now, I probably should have finished putting the Christmas lights up already. But everybody knows that the Christmas season officially begins after Thanksgiving. Everybody except the local Christmas stations, at least. There is only one song, though, that truly embodies the Christmas spirit: Merry Christmas From the Family by Robert Earl Keen.
Not that it is entirely true to life. Christmases for our family growing up were sober affairs.
It fits better with my wife’s family, who, as good Texans, don’t see anything weird about drinking margaritas on Christmas Eve. But I will have to save those pics for another post.
There is a long post to be written about how many country songs are both tongue-in-cheek and earnest at the same time. It’s a hillbilly thing. Merry Christmas From the Family is a prime example.
Merry Christmas From the Family is off REK’s album Gringo Honeymoon.

My favorite Christmas song, always gets me in the spirit. Brings back great memories of family Christmas parties. He really captured the feeling perfectly in this song.
